The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory government initiative aimed at promoting energy efficiency among large UK organisations. With Phase 4 of the scheme now in motion, businesses must stay informed about their obligations to ensure full compliance and avoid potential penalties. If your organisation qualifies, you should receive a notification from HMRC, but it’s essential to be proactive and understand the requirements in advance.
What is ESOS Phase 4?
ESOS is designed to help large businesses identify practical and cost-effective ways to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. The scheme mandates regular energy assessments, which must be carried out by approved Lead Assessors.
Key Dates for ESOS Phase 4
- Qualification Date: 31 December 2026
- Compliance Deadline: 5 December 2027
These are the critical milestones by which your business must determine whether it qualifies for the scheme and, if so, complete its assessment and submit the necessary evidence of compliance.
Who Qualifies for ESOS Phase 4?
Your organisation must participate in ESOS Phase 4 if, on the qualification date, it meets either of the following criteria:
-
Employs 250 or more people, or
-
Has an annual turnover of more than £44 million and an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38 million
If you meet these thresholds, participation in ESOS is not optional, it is a legal requirement.
